Ingredients & Tools:
• Castor seeds (cleaned and dried)
• Grinder or mortar and pestle
• Pot or cast iron pan
Water
• Cheesecloth or fine strainer
• Glass jar or bottle for storage
Method:
• Collect and Clean Seeds
Start by sourcing high-quality Ricinus communis seeds. Clean them thoroughly to remove any dirt or debris.
• Dry the Seeds
Lay them in the sun for a couple of days until completely dry. This makes it easier to extract the oil.
• Crush the Seeds
Use a grinder or a traditional mortar and pestle to crush the seeds into a coarse paste or powder.
• Boil with Water
In a deep pot, add the crushed seeds and pour enough water to cover them. Boil the mixture on medium heat, stirring occasionally. As it simmers, the oil begins to separate and float on top.
• Collect the Oil
After about 1–2 hours, you’ll notice a layer of oil forming on the surface. Carefully skim off the oil using a spoon or ladle.
• Strain and Store
Use a cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer to remove any residual solids. Pour the filtered oil into a sterilized glass jar or amber bottle. Store in a cool, dark place.
Note: While making castor oil at home is possible, be aware that raw castor seeds contain ricin, a toxic compound. Proper extraction and heating neutralize the toxins, but care must be taken. For safety, many people opt for cold-pressed, ready-made castor oil from reputable brands.
